He was only fourteen when he experienced
samadhi
(enlightenment),
complete absorption in pure awareness.
For the next twelve years he meditated in samadhi. For eight years he meditated
twenty-three hours every day. The remaining four years he meditated twelve
hours every day. There were periods when he did not return to ordinary
consciousness for months at a time.
He emerged from his twelve-year tapas
(spiritual penance or austerity)
on August 7, 1961, a fully Self-realized yogi.
Shivabalayogi completed this unusually severe tapas
not for himself but for the sake of others.
The powers he attained through tapas allow him to help others attain
peace and understanding. For three decades he traveled throughout
India and Sri Lanka, then from 1987-1991 in England and the United States.
Although he dropped his physical form in 1994, he remains the Living Yogi.

"Know truth through meditation, then you yourself will know
who you are,
your religion, your purpose in life, and your nature.
Do
not believe what others say and become a slave to religious prejudices.
Meditation is your religion. Meditation is your purpose. Meditation is
your path."
